Metal braces are the most common and affordable type of braces available today.
Metal braces are more comfortable today than ever before. They straighten your teeth using metal brackets and arch wires made of stainless steel. You also have the option of adding colored elastics for a more unique and colorful smile.
What Are Braces Made Of?
Metal braces consist of small metal brackets which are fitted to the front of your teeth with a wire running between them, kept in place by small elastic bands. The three major parts of metal braces are:
Brackets — Brackets are small, square-shaped pieces, which are attached to an orthodontic band or chemically affixed to the tooth surface.
Arch wires — Your arch wires are the metal wires that run through your braces. They move and guide your teeth to their proper position.
Ligature elastic — Ligature elastic or rubber bands are removable. They are attached to the bracket hooks and connect the upper and lower teeth.
How Do Braces Work?
Once attached to your teeth, braces gently apply pressure to loosen and reposition your teeth. The pull of the elastic applies consistent pressure which gradually influences upper and lower teeth movement toward the correct bite. Loosening of teeth is to be expected throughout the treatment— don’t worry, it’s normal! Your teeth will again become rigidly fixed in their new, corrected positions.
