What Are the Different Types of Braces?
Metal braces use stainless steel brackets and an arch wire in order to evenly apply pressure and move teeth. They stay fixed in the mouth and require regular adjustment by your orthodontist.
Additionally, patients need to take care to avoid certain foods, including those that are hard, sticky, or chewy, to avoid breaking a wire.
Composed of transparent ceramic brackets and a white wire, this option offers a more discreet and aesthetically-pleasing alternative to traditional metal braces.
However, it is important to note that ceramic brackets are larger than stainless steel brackets are more vulnerable to damage.
Lingual braces require each bracket to be customized to fit the inside contours of teeth.
When choosing among the different types of braces, patients may opt for this technique because it is invisible. That being said, lingual braces may be more difficult to clean and can require more frequent and longer dental appointments.
Unlike the three other types of braces discussed, Invisalign is not constructed with brackets or wires. Rather, the series of aligner trays are made of a smooth, clear plastic and customized to each patient.
Accordingly, Invisalign aligners are undetectable and no one will be able to tell that you are wearing them.
Other Invisalign benefits include:
- Can be removed for eating, brushing, and flossing
- Avoids irritation to gums and cheeks
- Doesn’t necessitate any food restrictions
- Requires fewer follow-up appointments
