5 Most Common Braces in VA

Posted: January 13, 2020

It’s not unusual for people to imagine a mouth full of metal and wires when they think of braces.

While metal braces remain a popular teeth-straightening solution, there are a number of other options for patients to consider.

Continue reading to learn all about the five most common braces in VA and which one may be right for you.

5 Most Common Braces in VA

1. Metal Braces

Unsurprisingly, metal braces are among the most common braces in VA. They are composed of a system of stainless steel brackets and wires, which are held in place by rubber bands, and apply even pressure to straighten teeth.

2. Ceramic Braces

Ceramic braces function in much the same way as traditional metal braces.

However, they feature translucent ceramic brackets that are similar to the tone and texture of natural teeth. For this reason, ceramic braces offer greater discretion and are more aesthetically-pleasing compared to traditional braces.

3. Lingual Braces

Lingual braces are applied to the inside of the mouth and move teeth using custom brackets and wires.

Due to their internal placement, they cannot be easily detected and offer another alternative to metal and ceramic braces.

4. Self-Ligating Braces

Although you may be less familiar with self-ligating braces, they are in fact one of the most common braces in VA.

Like metal and ceramic braces, they utilize brackets and wires to address crooked teeth, gaps, bite issues, and jaw misalignment. However, self-ligating braces employ clips and doors, rather than rubber bands, to connect wires and brackets.

5. Invisalign

Invisalign is a series of clear aligners that gently reposition teeth. Unlike the four other options, they do not involve brackets and wires, nor are they fixed in the mouth.

Instead, the custom trays are constructed with a smooth, BPA-free plastic, and can be removed for eating, brushing, and flossing.
